Methodology and coverage

How published construction judgments become cited relationships in the Construction Intelligence Graph, what we never do with them, and what the published record leaves out.

01

The source

We use published construction and engineering judgments from Find Case Law, principally the Technology and Construction Court. Judgments are used under the Open Justice Licence; computational analysis of them is the subject of our application for The National Archives' Computational Analysis Licence.

We link every judgment to its full record on Find Case Law. We do not rehost judgment text.

02

What we extract

Each judgment is read for the issues it decides and connected to the contract clauses, regulations and organisations those issues concern. Every connection is a typed relationship that carries the paragraph it came from, so anyone can see why a judgment was returned and check it against the source.

03

Where AI is used

A large language model assists the extraction. Its outputs are validated against the source text, and generated summaries are labelled as generated. Every link carries its source paragraph.

04

People

Natural persons other than judges are reduced to their role at extraction. Witness and expert credibility findings are not stored. Judges are kept as case metadata only: they can't be searched, filtered, counted or compared across cases.

Anonymisation orders and reporting restrictions in the source are respected. A judgment withdrawn or amended on Find Case Law is updated or removed from the graph at the next sync.

What we never do

  • Predict outcomes, or model the tendencies of any court or judge.
  • Publish win/loss statistics, or any frequency or trend claim drawn from the collection.
  • Advise whether to pursue a claim. The graph supports professional legal analysis; it doesn't replace it.
  • Score, rank or critique courts or judges.
06

Where it's shown

Extracted case data isn't published on open pages and isn't indexed by search engines. Our case pages carry films and figures quoted with their paragraphs, and are marked noindex; the graph behind them is shown in walkthroughs, and to registered users once the product opens.

07

Bias review

Every quarter we review extraction and retrieval against a hand-checked sample, checking that results don't systematically favour one side (employer or contractor), one court or one contract form. Findings are logged and corrected. Retrieval ranks by relevance to the user's issues, never by outcome.

08

Coverage: what the published record leaves out

Find Case Law is an incomplete record. Most construction disputes are resolved privately, by adjudication, arbitration or settlement, and are never published. So the absence of a judgment is shown as “not in the published record”, never as “no such case”, and we make no frequency or trend claims from the collection.
